I'm sorry I mistakenly thought it was your dad who had the Painter blood, it has been a long time since I corresponded with your mom. Some where she may have a couple of old letters from me dated around 1990 or 1992. Your mom and Maynard Painter sent me more Painter genealogy information than anyone else.

My parents were Fred Warren O'Hair and Artie Faye Painter O'Hair. My mom was the only child of Claude Thomas Painter and Mamie Small. I never knew my grandpa Painter since he died in 1947 and I was born in 1957. My youngest sister Sonja was born in 1956. Our two oldest siblings saw their Grandpa Painter. These two are my late brother Michael Clayton O'Hair who was born in 1940 and my late sister Claudia Jan O'Hair Reed. Claudia was named after her grandpa Painter. I know my brother remembered his grandpa Painter, as I can remember him talking about his grandpa and asking me "You never knew your Grandpa Painter did you?". I'm not sure if my sister Claudia remembered him though since she was born in 1942. I had another brother who lived only a short time, George Harold O'Hair. I think that he died in 1947 or 1948.

Claude T. Painter appears in the 1880 census for Douglas County, Missouri. For occupation for his dad Lemuel, it says something like "owns(or operates) a meat market". So I guess Lemuel didn't want to follow in his dad's footsteps making guns.

Yes, I would love to be one of Jacob's grandkids playing with one of those guns. I wouldn't be surprised if my grandpa Painter went out there playing with some of his grandpa's guns.

A metal detector might turn up some interesting things at Jake Painter's old homestead. Maybe Jake buried some guns or coins or other family trinkets in the ground. Who knows, maybe some of Jake's grandkids got to playing cowboys and Indians in the cave and lost some of Jakes guns in there.

In a way I feel like we, the descendants of Jake Painter should have some of his guns more than anyone else. An interesting side note, my brother Michael (Mickie) loved guns, and received a medal for marksmanship in the Marines. Mickie taught me how to shoot and he placed a high value on marksmanship. He taught his boys how to shoot when they were real young, way before they went into the Army. I think that some or all of Mickie's boys placed highly in at least one shooting competition. Mickie's son Shane O'Hair was in the Army and also loves guns. When Shane saw a picture of one of Jake's guns on the Internet, he was real interested. I told him how Jake was a famous gunsmith in Springfield, Missouri. My brothers other two sons Brian and Michael, were also in the Army and know how to fire weapons. Michael was in the recent Iraq war.

Do you know the addresses, phone no.s, or e-mail addresses of any of Lemuel Painter's descendants? I'm having a hard time finding Lemuel's wife, Artie J. Smith in the 1850 census. I thought that maybe she is listed by her middle name, so I thought that maybe some of her and Lemuel's descendants might know what the J. stands for. Also, I can't find where or when any of Lemuel and Artie's other sons such as Otis, Charles, John F.(for Fred?), or Wilburn (William?) died. I thought if I could find a death certificate for some of them, maybe it would state what there mother's middle name was or even show a longer form of the name Artie such as Artemisia. If you don't want to give those names or addresses over the Internet, just e-mail it to me at fredohair2000@yahoo.com .

Can you give me the pedigree from Samuel Painter, father of Jake, back to the Pennsylvania Quakers? I'm real interested in seeing it. If I'm bombarding you with too many requests just take your time sending it.

Thanks for all of your help. - Fred M. O'Hair
