Hercules J.: b. 26 Aug 1855; d. 9 Sep 1875 Lydia is the subject of a detailed biographical entry in a history of Morrow County, Ohio. Her reported date of birth is less than 5 months after the commonly reported date of birth of her older sister, Mary. Because Lydia herself may well have supplied the information for her biography, and because her age is reported consistently in censuses, obit., and headstone, a good bet is that Lydia’s reported date of birth, 3 February 1817, is more reliable, and that Mary was born in 1814, 2 years earlier than is reported usually. 1850 age 32 born 1818 1860 age 43 born 1817 1870 age 53 born 1817 1880 age 63 born 1817 Lydia’s reported dates of birth and of marriage indicate that she was age 17 years and 7 months when she married. “LYDIA RUHL…was born Feb. 3, 1817, in Richland Co., Ohio; her parents, John and Rachel Painter, were natives of Virginia, and emigrated to Ohio about the year 1816, settling on Government land in Richland Co. She was married Sept. 18, 1834, to Jeremiah Ruhl, son of George and Elizabeth Ruhl…He [Jeremiah] died November 19, 1873. By their marriage nine children were born, only three of whom are now living—Hiram, John and George W. The two oldest are married, and have families; the youngest is in the West… She owns 120 acres of land, on which she and grandchildren are now living.” (History of Morrow County and Ohio (Chicago: O. L. Baskin & Co., Historical Publishers, 1880), pp. 628-29.) “Died—Feb. 23rd at the home of her son, Hiram Ruhl, Mrs. Lydia Ruhl, aged 81 years and 21 days. The funeral services were held at Shaucks church and were conducted by Rev. W. E. Amsbaugh. Mother Ruhl united with the Baptist church forty-one years ago and was a faithful member to the last. She leaves one son, five grand-children and several great-grandchildren, the husband and eight children preceded her.” (Lydia Ruhl obit., Morrow County Sentinel, 8 Mar 1898.) No will; no estate administration. Note: date of birth computed from date of death and age at death is 2 February 1817—one day off. ----- Notes Harold Painter, The Painter Family (1975), p. 35.
