Eldest child of John Painter and his second wife Rachel Redd; granddaughter of John Painter and Susannah Stratton, and of George Redd and Rachel Fawcett. Miriam Painter was named after her mother’s sister and mother’s paternal grandmother. Biblical spelling Miriam used for consistency. The 1850 census—only known record from her lifetime—uses “Mariam,” and her headstone “Marium.” Born: 1809, Frederick County, Virginia. Died: 12 Aug 1856 (about age 47), Holt County, Missouri; buried Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon, Holt County. Marriage: Levi Ruhl, about 1831, Richland County, Ohio. Levi, son of George Ruhl and Elizabeth Prosser; born 1808, York County, Pennsylvania; died 1889 (about age 81), Spokane County, Washington; buried Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, Spokane County. (Levi’s younger brothers Jeremiah and Adam later married Miriam’s younger sisters Lydia and Susannah, respectively.) Children of Miriam Painter and Levi Ruhl (all born in Ohio, presumably in Perry Township, Richland County): 1. Elizabeth: b. 11 Dec 1832; m. Nov 1852, Benjamin Thuma; d. 1903, Spokane Co., Washington 2. George: b. Aug 1834; m. 29 May 1859, Mary Catherine Nickell (Nichol); d. 1923, Blaine Co., Oklahoma 3. Rachel: b. about 1837; m. 7 Oct 1858, Noah Huntsman; d. after 4 Jun 1860 and most probably before Noah’s remarriage on 25 Feb 1866 4. John P. (Painter?): b. 17 Mar 1839; m. 7 Mar 1867, Isabelle Cable, d. 3 Nov 1920, Holt Co., Missouri 5. Mary Olive: b. 1841, m. 18 Feb 1866, John H. Brockman; d. 1907, Spokane Co., Washington 6. Caroline L. (Lorraine?) “Cal”: b. Aug 1844, m. 24 Dec 1865, Henry H. “Harry” Brockman; d. 25 Feb 1918, Kootenai Co., Idaho? According to Harold Painter’s The Painter Family (1975), Miriam was the first child of John Painter and Rachel Redd #2, born in 1809. While no source of this year of birth is indicated, he cites the 1850 census. in which “Mariam Ruhle” was reported (on 10 September 1850) to be age 39, thus born in 1810-11. The 1840 census indicates that she was born in 1810 or later. A 1 August 1812 date of birth is calculated from the date of death and age at death inscribed on her headstone. My inclination is to accept Harold Painter’s account that Miriam was the eldest of 12 children, born in 1809. This places her birth between her parents’ 2 June 1808 marriage (for which there is a marriage record), and her brother Hamilton’s 24 November 1810 birth (which seems to be a reliable date). By mid-1812, her family may have already left Virginia for Ohio. While Miriam’s date of birth is in question, her place of birth is more certain: Virginia, most probably on her family’s Frederick County farm. The 1850 census shows that she was born in Virginia. Her elder son George in the 1880 census reported Ohio as her place of birth, but in the 1900 through 1920 censuses reported Virginia. Her younger son John reported Virginia as mother’s place of birth in the 1880 through 1920 censuses. A volume of early Richland County marriage records is lost, and there is no record of a Painter-Ruhl marriage in nearby Knox or Marion County. Both the Painter and Ruhl family farms were in Richland’s Perry Township, about 4 miles apart. Heads of households John Painter and George “Ruhle” were enumerated in Perry Township in 1830, and Levi “Rule” paid a chattel tax in Perry Township in 1836 (as did his father-in-law). The estimated year of marriage, 1831, is based on the ages of Miriam and Levi, and on their first child’s date of birth, 11 December 1832. (Some sources indicate Elizabeth was born in 1833, but this would be less than 9 months before the birth of her brother George.) The Levi and Miriam Ruhl family migrated from Ohio to Holt County, Missouri, probably after the November 1852, Richland County, Ohio, marriage of their daughter Elizabeth. Their other five children were married in Holt County from 1858 to 1866. Levi remained in Holt County until after 1870. He was enumerated in the household of his daughter Mary and her husband John H. Brockman in the 1880 U.S. Census in Pawnee County, Kansas, in the 1885 Kansas state census in Cloud County, and in the 1887 Washington territorial census in Spokane County. He died in 1889, and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, the same Spokane County cemetery as his daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Caroline. (Levi’s years of birth and death are from his headstone inscription.) Sons George and John both remained in Missouri until after 1900, when George moved to Oklahoma. Rachel, last recorded in the 1860 U.S. Census in Holt County, may have returned to Richland County, Ohio (after an unconfirmed report of divorce). The first four children of Miriam and Levi Ruhl were named after the children’s four grandparents, further confirming identification. Daughter Rachel Ruhl married Noah Huntsman, nephew of Jeremiah “Jerry” Huntsman, who married Mary Painter, Miriam’s sister. Son John P. Ruhl and his first cousin, Edwin C. Painter (Hamilton’s son), married Cable sisters Martha and Isabelle, respectively. John P. Ruhl’s full name may be John Painter Ruhl. Caroline L. “Cal” Ruhl’s middle name may be Lorraine; a family researcher recalls an aunt was named Lorraine after “Cal.” Also helping to confirm identity: Miriam’s nephew Nelson William Painter (also Hamilton’s son), and sons-in-law Noah Huntsman, and John and Henry H. Brockman, all served in Company F, 4th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry. ----- Notes Miriam Painter’s year of birth, husband cited in Harold Painter, The Painter Family (1975), p. 25. Inserted into the account of the children of John Painter and second wife Rachel Redd on page 35, Harold Painter states: “My great-uncle, Sherman M. Painter, furnished most of this information some 40 years ago.” Sherman Marquis Painter (1857-1938), a son of Hamilton Painter (1810-1897), was born, and worked for most of his life, on the Painter family farm in Perry Township, Richland County. The extent of “this information” is not specific. Rule, Levi: 2 horses, 2 cows; 96 cents; Perry Twp.
