I don’t know which George you are looking for…
I am looking for a George A. (b. about 1856) who married Dartha Schooler in 1881; who may have had a son named George Washington (b. 1881).
Here are some considerations…
1) There was not a system of standardized spelling at that time… So Panter, Panther,Painter, Paynter, etc. can all be the same family.Words were written phonetically and according to dialect. Cultural awareness created several initiatives to standardize words; however this was generally for the educated elite. It wasn’t until Pres. Roosevelt’s era (1906) that standardized spelling was truly promoted. For example the name Schooler, was also documented as Shuler and Schraler.(I know… it makes things even more complicated).
2) About the census age… you are absolutely right. The age varies generally by a few years. Some of the later censuses wrote the participants DOB; however the earlier censuses did not.It was an estimate based on what the participant reported and the month that the census was recorded.
3) George A. is definitely the son of Isaac Painter… The question is which Geo. A is Isaacs son?I do not believe my linage can be traced through Isaac, however yours may…George A. was a popular name!!!
4) Vicky Sullivan did a wonderful job researching the Painter/Bender line through Isaac Painter b. 1811… However, the Geo. A. that I am looking for is too young to be Isaac’s son.I believe that Vicky inserted Geo. A (b. 1856 who married to Dartha Schraler 1881) in place of a different George A.I can prove this if I can get home soon…It has been a few years since I really researched this (I forgot a lot of details). All my records are 350 miles away.
5) You mentioned Vinita… I think we are looking for the same George. I thought George W. was buried in Vinita, was George A. also buried there?
How are you related to George Washington?I am Lula Bells granddaughter (who was the daughter of Elizabeth). I was raised by my father in Alaska, so I most likely have never met you.
6) I recently e-mailed Roberta Haws.If you are related to George W. you are also related to her (you probably already know this).
7) As I told Roberta, I have a master’s degree in Indigenous Studies, so I know a little bit about Native American history and have some connections in the BIA.Please let me know if you have any “Indian” leads or questions.
8) I am getting ready for fishing season (I commercial fish), so I will try to e-mail you as I discover information. If you do not hear from me for several months, I will be back on it in the fall.(Hopefully, you will have solved the puzzle by then)!!!=)
9) Thank you for the e-mail.I really love doing this research and it is wonderful to meet distant relatives!!!Thank care, Stacia
