Isaac PAINTER, 1837-1919, OH-IL

Isaac PAINTER was born May 1837 in Ohio. His father was Andrew, his mother is unknown. His brothers were George Washington (1821-1920) and John (1832-1919). Nothing is known of his early life.

Probably during the 1850s he moved from Ohio to Illinois. He married Barbara Ann McLAIN on 6 Jul 1859 in Champaign Co., Illinois. Barbara Ann had been born in 1825 in Pennsylvania. Her maiden name was HILLSBURY. She had been twice widowed and had three children. She died 9 Nov 1897, and is buried in the Willowbrook Cemetery, Fisher, Illinois. Isaac PAINTER appears to have become a farmer, instead of farm laborer, by marrying a farmer's daughter, and first reported ownership of land in the 1880 Census.

Together, Isaac and Barbara Ann (HILLSBURY) PAINTER and had three children, all born in Illinois:

John Wesley, 1860-1927; married Charity Jane PAINTER (see note below)
Alice 1863-before 1880; unmarried
Isaac Sherman, 1866-1946; married Emma Marie BIER

(The two sons have many living descendants.)

Isaac PAINTER died at age 82 on 10 Nov 1919, near Alma, Gratiot Co., Michigan. He is buried next to his brother, John, in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Breckinridge, Michigan.

My late grandfather, who knew his great-uncle Isaac PAINTER, says that he was a Civil War veteran. An Isaac PAINTER served in the 155th Illinois Infantry Regiment, and reported his home as Rantoul, Champaign Co., Illinois.

Note: Charity Jane PAINTER was the daughter of George Washington PAINTER, and thus her husband's first cousin or half first cousin.

Would appreciate any information or ideas. My thanks,

Eric E. (Robert K., Earl Irving, Emanuel, George Washington, Andrew) PAINTER
