Laura--we have been in contact regarding our Paines but I will also post here in case we have some cousins looking for information.

My family line begins with Philip Paine of Newcastle, NH who married Christian Hall of Portsmouth, NH. They had a son, Amos Paine, who lived in Hampton, NH. He married Lydia Abbott.

Richard Paine, son of Amos, was born 2 March 1757 at Rye in Rockingham County, NH. He died at Berlin, VT on 21 April, 1847. He was a Revolutionary soldier and drew a pension as such (Survivor File # 21408, Revolutionary War, US Pension Bureau) He married Hannah Baker who was born at Salisbury, MA 28 Sept, 1763 and died at Montpelier, VT on 21 Jan, 1844.

Richard and Hannah lived at Center Harbor when my ancestor, Richard Paine, was born there on 25 Feb 1787. I have no information on any other children of Richard and Hannah but would be very surprised if Richard was the only child. Richard the younger married Mary Jones of Weare, NH. Both Richard and Mary died in Vermont, where at least one of their children was born, so I assume they moved there along with the elder Richard and Hannah sometime in the early 1800s.

Richard the younger and Mary had at least nine children, three of which were my ancestor, Erastuc C. Paine and his brothers William and Ezra.

Erastus changed the spelling of the family name to "Payne".

Erastus moved west in 1852, settling briefly in Wisconsin before moving to Minnesota in 1859. Erastus died in Mankato, MN in 1892.

I am descended from his son, Willard Tabor Payne, who moved to Tacoma, Washington. Willard Payne is mt great-great grandfather.
