Thanks, Ed, I think we've talked over that entry before. It's hard for me to understand why that family got on the Cherokee rolls and mine didn't (Ellsby's father was a brother to my gggrandfather, John Carroll Payne). Maybe mine hid too well? Or married into a different tribe? Or--who knows. Maybe people just thought they were Indians because they were a wild bunch. Anyway, I do know from the Monroe County Heritage book that the Rapers, Mary Ann (Polly)'s parents, were Cherokee, so that explains this entry.
