I believe you have come across the family of Ellsbury Payne,b 1820, and his wife Mary Raper, d of Thomas and Catherine Raper. Their children were Elizabeth Catherine b 1842, Jeanette, Thomas, b 1844, Eleanor, b 1850, and, later, Sarah, b 1853. They lived mostly around Cherokee Co NC and Monroe Co TN. Ellsbury was the son of Thomas Payne and Elizabeth Dobbs. The Rapers definitely had Cherokee roots. The elder Paynes are not as easy to prove, but, if Ellsbury made the rolls, he must have shown Cherokee lineage of his own.
Some of the Paynes on the Hester Rolls seem to be the children of Lemuel Enos Marion Payne and his wife Eliza Bethany Lenderman, m 1876 in Monroe Co TN. Lemuel was the son of George Washington Payne and Nancy Hooper. G.W. was the son of John Carroll Payne, a brother of the Thomas Payne above who was the father of Ellsbury.
Lemuel and Eliza had these children:
Charles b 1877 Monroe Co; Eliza Jane, b 1878, ma Earnest Tate; Jesse Marion b 1881; George Sanford b 1883; Nancy Ada b 1884; David Leonard b 1892; and Elia Myrtle b 1894. Of course, only Charles, Eliza, Marion, and George would have been old enough to be on the rolls. Not all of these children seem to appear on the Hester Rolls.
