James,

The easiest way for someone to get the PAF program and the basic/trial version of PAF Companion is to go to https://familysearch.org/products and download them.

Where your data is concerned, a PAF backup will be smaller than a PAF data file because it is in compressed format. (The person receiving it will use PAF's File > Restore to uncompress it.) If that is still too large, you might get a free dropbox.com account and put a copy of your PAF file in the Public folder. Then right-click on the file and select Dropbox > Copy Public Link, and paste the link into an email to your relative.

The link will look something like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20318248/BillsFavorites.html
