Thanks very much Dave.
I did remember to replace the * with a name of my choosing, and to have "print to file" checked. It didn't move it - just sort of stalled. I had thought about needing to have Word or Microsoft Office installed and thought WORD (that's what I used to have when the present portable hard drive was in fact, some time back, my internal drive on the old computer. I now have MICROSOFT OFFICE installed on present computer.
I've been looking around at what's on the portable hard drive (Western Digital My Passport has called it F drive). There seems to be a lot missing e.g. I used to have, for emails, OUTLOOK EXPRESS - they've gone it seems. I now have OUTLOOK. WORD DOCUMENTS don't seem to be there.. ...and more importantly, for the PAF files, no sign of WORD (which would explain why I can't get Print to File to work.
I don't know if this is relevant but the old computer had XP and my current computer has VISTA.
I'm further confused, as with my trying to see/get familiar again with that drive and what's on it, I somehow (I think) transferred on to it all my current PICASA pictures. I didn't particulary want that to happen.
Also, and this is getting away from my original question about PAF, I'm finding it hard to tell the different between the F drive (external) and my computer... I don't know how to explain this... I'm pretty confused. When I'm working with F drive, for the moment, that's all I want to be doing. It's as if I have the choice to be looking at external drive and my computer at same time. .. going from one to the other.
I guess I need to know now is how do I get WORD on to external drive. I have never understood with PAF import/export and hope I don't have to work out how to do it .. I'm thinking maybe this is what I should do to get the PAF off external drive on to computer?
Your explanation, Dave, was terrific. I can remember once, not knowing what .rtf stood for...yet alone knowing to replace the * with words! When you know something, it's easy ... when you don't.....hmm. I didn't know about being able to edit the saved .rtf file.
I'm so relieved to have not lost my PAFs after not having gthe courage to check and see whether they were there or not, and once I can get this WORD issue sorted, I'll be off and away, ready to write my family history book, nearly.
