Print To File won't work

My old computer was corrupting so the hard drive was ripped out. The information that survived on that hard drive has since been put on a portable hard drive. I was very anxious about my PAF file and only today had the courage to plug it in and see if all my family history I'd been doing for years, had survived. It seems it has, as I've been able to access it. It's been quite a while and I've nearly forgotten how to use it... I have been able to PRINT up from my Canon Printer, Family Group Record, say, but when I press PRINT TO FILE I can't save it so I can send it as a WORD document. The ending is .rtf I think. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?
