Bill -- Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I understand about hard disk failures but have been fortunate so far. I think the information you provided will help me organize my backups in a sensible manner, and most importantly, allow me to backup to 650MB CD-R disks instead of using seven 3 1/2 floppy disks. You led me through the minefild, so to speak, because nothing I have read in he PAF manuals even mention the techniques you taught me. I now feel comfortable in being able to use the backup feature more effectively.

I have a favorites folder on my computer where I place my PAF Manuals and related items. I now want to review them just in case I missed something.

I am now in the process of trying to split my PAF file into two segments, one for me and another for my wife as we do not have any ancestors in common. I now have all our families in one large file -- which works wonderfully well. The process started when my file size began approaching the 100,000 mark and I became concerne. Unnecessarily so, because I later learned that you can have up to a million individuals in a single PAF database.

I have published most of my lines but have a few to go. PAF 5 Companion is very useful but it's formats are not the best for publishing. I am no abandoning PAF as I like it very much, but thinking about also purchasing The Master Genealogist program (TMG), importing my PAF database, and using it for my future publishing needs. It would be better if my file was split in two for this purpose.

Organizing things on my computer is a major weakness of mine. You have helped me in one facet of this at least.

Thanks very much for offering your excellent advise.
