It appears to be pretty straightforward, though I have to admit that I rarely have two files open at once.

Open the first file, then the second. When I do that, the second file completely overlays the first.

But if you go up to the menu bar and click on "Window", you get the option of tiling horizontally or vertically, or cascading, where one file overlays the other, but without completely obscuring the other file.

Without using any of the tiling options, you can still switch between the two files using the lower part of the Window menu item; a check mark appears next to the currently displayed file and you just click on the one you want to see. It seems very similar to having two spreadsheets open in Excel and switching between them.
