From the version number and lack of ability to create databases, you have downloaded the basic/demo version of PAF Companion rather than PAF. It is an easy mistake to make. Go back to www.familysearch.org and click the other download link. (PAF Companion is a printing utility that adds additional charts to PAF's repertoire.)
I think you will really like PAF once you have had a chance to try it. It is a powerful but easy to use program. There are also excellent aids in the Help menu, plus online support forums like this one, training available at Family History Centers, and free telephone support at 1-866-406-1830 (in North America, other areas have other support numbers) and free email support at support@familysearch.org
