Hi Nancy,
AFN stands for Ancestral File Number. AFN are used by the LDS to number their records. The only way they appear in your records is if you download from the LDS site, or use their CD's.
The AFN number identifies the LDS record you used for your family tree.
Should you choose to use the online LDS records, please take note that there is a disclaimer warning users that the records are NOT verified against any document. Most people miss that important part.
