Actually the purpose of the filter was to determine which females had that field blank. The second filter worked better and I had a list of about 7,000 married females without the married name recorded in that field. It took several days but now I have filled them all in. Now, using a different filter I can sort to find all females with a certain name, rather than just the ones born with that surname. Also in the married name field, I put all married surnames, in case a female was married more than once.

My new filter would allow (ie) to search for all my Mary Smith via
surname contains Smith
or
married not contains Smith
and
given name contains Mary

Works well; however it was time consuming to do.
Thanks
