partners who never married

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem. How do I enter parents of a child who never married? If I enter them as normal as parents, even without marraige information, the program lists them as married by default. So, should I enter the father for example and then add a parent (the mother) as part of a 2nd "marraige"? This goes for same sex partners (who may or may not be married, but who live as a family unit) who adopt... Is there a way to enter them in as married? So far, PAF automatically changes the gender of the 2nd individual to be the opposite of the first. What do y'all think?

Thanks for your help....
