As well as following John's good advice, you may be able to have some success using a program called Genviewer LITE which is available for FREE download from:
http://www.mudcreek.ca/
From their website: "GENViewer Lite is a Windows based application that is used to view and analyze GEDCOM and PAF 3, 4, 5 and TMG genealogy files. With GENViewer Lite, you can search and view dozens of files in minutes".
