Source Record Cited Independent of Master List?

The source list to add specific citations at several places (record, b, mar, d, etc.) in large numbers of persons' records makes citing sources very easy. But, as you add sources, the list continues to grow and I can see that it won't be long before I'll be scrolling through the source list to find the source I need to cite.
The problem is...the sources MUST STAY on the list. MY PROBLEM: I want to cite sources for information on Uncle John Doe but, he's the ONLY ONE in the thousands of my ancestors, for whom that source is required. MUST that source be FOREVER resident in my Master Source List?
If so, this is DUMB that we cannot make a Source Record that is INDEPENDENT from the Master List. Please help.
