Can we get serious here? Hopefully the PAF software developers read this forum, because this has been a problem since PAF was a baby (PAF 1.0 or 1.1 was my first version). Imagine that you have a large file of primarily one surname [mine contains about 150,000 folks]. You have a "new" John, Edward, Mary or Sarah, and want to cross-check to see if you might already have that person entered. This was relatively easy 25 years ago, when I was using my trusty 3x5 index card catalogue, since I had the file indexed by surname/firstname/birth date. It is not easy (and sometimes virtually impossible) with the current PAF Search/Index function, since an alphabetical sort is organized only by surname/given name. So if you have 6300 John Barneys, it is worthless to sort them by surname/given name, with no particular order [actually there is: reverse RIN order, for whatever that's worth]. Yes, I know I can do an Advanced Search, and specify a range of birth/christening dates. But, as I'm sure you all know, such a search takes almost forever with a large file. So, for you PAF development folks: Please include a sort feature with at least one optional sort parameter below surname/given name. -- Cliff in Virginia http://www.barneyfamily.org
