John & Hannah Padley of Flat Islands NFLD
John Padley of Flat Islands, Placentia Bay Newfoundland was married to Hannah Collins on May 8, 1846. It is the earliest recorded marriage of a Padley on Flat Islands.
John and Hannah had sons John (1847), Henry Isaac (1854), Eli (1857), Samuel (1859) and Thomas James (1863). They had daughters Mary Ann (1866) and Susannah (1872).
It appears that around 1860 - 1870 the name was changed to Paddle. The marriage records for John Junior (1871), Eli (1879), and Henry Isaac (1877)are recorded as Paddle. I attribute this to the poor spelling abilities of the clergy of the day.
Thomas James was married as Padley in 1888. There is no record of Samuel marrying on Flat Islands. He may have moved to Ontario and married there.
I am trying to connect John Padley (the elder) with his roots in England. Little is know about this period in Flat Islands history. IF anyone in England that has researched the Padley/Paddle surname has any information it would be appreciated.
