Dear Dennis:
Because they came from Somerset,I too have an interest in the Padfield family in Essex. My interest is that my wife's maternal grandmother Agnes Padfield (about whom we know very little at present - I set out below the information that I do have)may possibly be a member of your family.
Agnes's grand-daughters believed that Agnes was born in Ireland, but (perhaps not surprisingly in view of the widespread destruction of Irish census and other records) no information about her or her husband Alfred Hemmens has yet emerged from Ireland. However, an LDS search has found a christening record for Agnes Annie Padfield, daughter of Henry Padfield and Elizabeth, christened at Eaton Socon Church, Bedfordshire, England on 26 April 1874, who was of the right age to be the mother of Vera Hemmens. An 1881 Great Britain (i.e. excluding Ireland) census search has found what is almost certainly the same family at 81 Roseberry Street, Toxteth Park, Lancashire. That family comprised Henry (34, born Wellon, Somerset - see in the Somerset context the Notes for Alfred Hemmens), Elizabeth (35, born Coldashby, Northamptonshire), George P(11, born Studley, Warwickshire), Agnes A (9, born Ettingshead, Staffordshire), Lizzie (7, born Eaton Lecon, Bedfordshire), Harry (5, born Eaton Lecon) and Emily (1, born Leigh, Lancashire). The census enumerator made several errors in the return: "Wellon" does not exist and should probably be Wellington; Cold Ashby should be two words; "Eaton Lecon" does not exist and almost certainly represents a mis-hearing of Eaton Socon; and the ages and places of birth of Agnes and Lizzie were probably transposed. Possibly this peripatetic family or some members of it subsequently went to Ireland. It may be merely coincidental, but could be more, that by about 1903 the Agnes who is known to have been Vera's mother was living (with Vera) at Luton, also in Bedfordshire, and that by 1930 at the latest she had settled at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, not far from Bedfordshire.
Do this tie in with any data that you have, please?
