The murder fits the timeline and may provide an alternate explanation for why I cannot find Hezekiah's name in GA records.Thanks.
I just returned from our library where I looked up the 1805 Will of Thomas Pace to get the exact wording. Our copy - on microfilm - is almost unsatisfactory - blurry and low contrast - but as best I can read the four bequests, they are:
"Item.I give unto Robert Peebles & Rebecca his wife Two Negroes Named Peter & Fanny to them & their Heirs forever.
Item.I give unto Richard Morris & Elizabeth his wife one Negro Named Siller[?] to them and their Heirs forever.
Item.I give unto William Pace one Negro by Name Austen[?] to him and his Heirs forever.
Item.I give unto Hezekiah Wheeler one Negro Named R___ ___ & Child Named Rose acknowledging myself fully satisfied for the same by said Wheeler to him and his Heirs forever."
The part about "acknowledging myself fully satisfied for the same" sounds almost like the wording one would find in a receipt of sale.It is surely strange to find in a will. But I suppose it could be interpreted to mean that Hezekiah Wheeler had previously bought two slaves from Thomas Pace, and Thomas Pace was using his will as the vehicle to acknowledge the sale, and give Hezekiah clear title. It IS strange!
