This would be William A.Smith of Tyler Hill, Pa.in Damascus Township. He was partners in the store business with his step father David Fortnam. He built a fine house about 1876.He bought a huge amount of basswood from the Lovelass brothers and "neglected to pay".From then on he was known as "Basswood Billy" to differentiate from another William Smith in our small town.Sometime before 1880 the Sheriff sold his house and the partnership store and he left his wife and three children and went west [info from local newspaper article].I have lived within sight of the house he built for 60+ years. There is an article [on line] about this called "the ups and downs of life" in the New York Sun newspaper dated Oct.5, 1880.
