Nathaniel1 Welch Jr., son of Nathaniel Welch, was born 1771. Nathaniel died 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 67. His body was interred 1839 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

He married Nancy Hakes BY 1811. (Nancy Hakes is Nancy was born 1783 in New York. Nancy was the daughter of Solomon Hakes and Anna Downing. Nancy died in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age unknown. Since Nancy is of a family that settled in Columbia Township, it may give us some clues about how and why the Welch line moved to the Sullivan Township area. The HAKES records do not show a presence in Vermont, so perhaps Nancy and Nathaniel married in New York while the Welches were enroute from Vermont. Then the families of both Nathaniel and Nancy moved into the same area on opposite sides of the present Tioga/Bradford County line.

Nathaniel registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Nathaniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Nathaniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Nancy and Nathaniel were 40-50 and 50-60 respectively. Their household included a female 20-30, two males 15-20, two females and a male 10-15, a male 5-10 and one under five.

He made a will 12 JUN 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Wife - Nancy Welch, Sons, James, Josiah, David, Amos, Daniel,. Daus. Sally, Anna, Lucretia, Nancy Jane. Exec. James Welch, Wit. Elijah Welch, Uriah D. Welch. Is this the Nathaniel buried at State Road age 68 in 1839? Somebody's dates are wrong or his parents started having babies very, very young, particularly his mother. If those dates are correct, it would indicate that Nathaniel, Sr. may have had a first wife who was mother of Nathaniel, Jr., rather than Lura Dickenson. Needs investigation. DO NOT KNOW which Nathaniel is buried at State Road. INVESTIGATE.

Nathaniel Welch Jr. and Nancy Hakes had the following children:

2 i. Sallie2 Welch (#3457) was born in Vermont 1811. She married Joel Hall BEF 1844. (Joel Hall is #3458.) Joel was born 1814 in Vermont. Joel was the son of Moses R. Hall* and Betsey Unknown (Hall). An 86 year old woman Betsey Hall born in New York living with Joel in 1850. Mother ? Sallie and Joel went west. Minnie WELCH Seymour record includes only the first two children of this family.
3 ii. Daniel Welch (#3461) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1812. Individual flags: Obituary. Daniel died 13 MAR 1885 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 72. His body was interred MAR 1885 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Lucy Ayers BEF 1840. (Lucy Ayers is #3462.) Lucy was born 1821 in Pennsylvania. Lucy was the daughter of Gilbert Ayers. Lucy died 4 MAY 1892 at age 70. Her body was interred May 1892 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lucy was listed as a mother in LeRoy D. Welch's household on the 1880 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

Daniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lucy and Daniel had one female under five in their household.

In the Census of 1850, Daniel was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Daniel was a farmer with property worth $1200.

In the Census of 1860, Daniel was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Daniel was a farmer with real property valued at $1000 and personal property valued at $400. There is also a 58 year old Rebecca Ashley in the household as a servant. #15760 fits this description but she has been married twice and might not be using her birthname.

Daniel was listed as a father in LeRoy D. Welch's household on the 1880 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Mansfield Advertiser 18th Mar 1885: Died Daniel Welch Sullivan twp, 13th Mar 1885 in 75th year, a life resident, son of Nathaniel- a pioneer, left 5 daughters and 2 sons.

4 iii. James Welch (#3465) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 11 MAR 1814. Individual flags: Obituary. James died 10 NOV 1895 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 81. Another Landmark Taken - Mr. James WELCH of Sullivan, and one of that townships oldest residents, died at 3 o'clock last Sunday morning, Nov. 10th, aged 81 years and 8 months. Mr. WELCH enjoyed exceptionally robust health up to about six months ago, when began the general giving away of his bodily functions which ended in his peaceful death as above stated. Though a life long resident of this county and possessed of ample means, Mr. WELCH had never ridden on the cars. In early life he followed for a time the calling of a teamster, and as such hauled many loads of merchandise from Havana at the head of Seneca Lake to the merchants of Troy, Mainesburg, and Covington. Elmira at that time was the nearest hamlet. January 6, 1849, he married Rosilla RICH of Troy, who died in 1874, leaving five daughters and one son. On account of the critical illness of his daughter, Miss Belle WELCH, the obsequies were private. His body was interred NOV 1895 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Rosilla Rich* BY 1840. (Rosilla Rich* is #3466.)

Rosilla was born 23 MAY 1820 in Troy, Troy Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Rosilla died 11 MAR 1875 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 54. Her body was interred MAR 1875 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Rosilla is probably part of the family of Elisha Rich who came from Vermont to Bradford County.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Rosilla and James did not have any children in their 1840 household.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

5 iv. Ann (Nancy) Welch (#184) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 25 JAN 1817. Ann died 18 JUL 1898 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 81. Her body was interred JUL 1898 in Gray Valley Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Obadiah Smith BEF 1845. (Obadiah Smith is #183.) Obadiah was born 4 NOV 1815 in Hector, Schuyler, New York. Obadiah was the son of Joshua Smith* and Sarah Unknown (Smith). He married Kate Unknown (Canady) 29 JUN 1899 in Sylvania, Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. See account of his second marriage at age 83 in Sullivan scrapbook

Obadiah died 7 JUN 1905 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 89. His body was interred JUN 1905 in Gray Valley Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Obadiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Obadiah was living with a woman between 60 and 70 who is most likely his mother, Sarah. They were next door to Amos Mudge and Lucy in the house that remained with Obadiah's descendants for well over a century. The Mudge property also, remained in the family until about 1954. In May 1997, Joan NASH Odell and I walked along the top of the hill behind this property. From that vantage point we could get great views of Gray Valley, The Route 6 area, on the back we could see the North Road and the Sanitarium Hill area. We also found all the fields delineated by the old stone walls that Obadiah most certainly had a hand in building, and we found the intersecting stone walls form the Mudge property adjoining.

In the Census of 1850, Obadiah was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Obadiah was a farmer with property worth $1000.

Obadiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Obadiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Obadiah and Ann lived on Gray Valley Road just south of the Amos Mudge place. In May of 1997, Joan O'Dell and I walked the ridge along which Obadiah cleared the land and farmed. We saw his stone fences still standing, a little worse for the wear. We enjoyed the views of Gray Valley and the North Road and Sanitarium Hill that he enjoyed as he worked with his horse teams on the rolling fields. The view is probably little changed since his time. Many of the houses which were new when he saw them are now only foundations or rotting wood. In some cases newer houses have replaced the old ones. Tractors dot the fields below instead of horses. Hay from the fields is no longer piled in stacks, but is rolled into great cylinders probably bigger than Obadiah's outhouse ever was. But the rolling hills and the forests are very much as they were back then, and in a few cases direct descendants of his neighbors still live on the same properties. In fact, one can look down to the house where Obadiah and Ann's great grand-daughter, Charlotte UPDYKE Brace lived until her death in 1971. And all of them, Obadiah and Ann, Cornelious and Martha, Cora and Elmer, Charlotte and Glenn are in the Cemetery at the foot of the hill.

6 v. Josiah Welch (#3463) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1817. Josiah died 1883 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 66. Newspaper 1883: Mainesburg Items - Potatoes continue to rot, there will be about half a crop.

We just heard that Joshua WELCH is dead. He has been a long sufferer, another good citizen has left us, he was a kind parent, and will be much missed by many friends.

The cold wave that struck us on Sunday night, did, according to good estimates $100,000 damage in Sullivan alone. We had calculated on cheap and plenty B. W. Pancakes and now we shall have to go back to the old staff of life, plain bread.

A report has been in circulation that a man east of Mainesburg left his team without hitching in front of his house, while he went in to change his clothes and that the team became restless and started to run off and he hearing them started after in a nude state, and that his wife rushed after him with his clothes and so forth. I am informed that the report is incorrect there is no truth in it it. he was not naked. He had his socks on. If any such report comes to you for print you should not publish it. He married Susannah Cudworth BEF 1847. (Susannah Cudworth is #3464.)

Susannah was born 1822 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Susannah was the daughter of Samuel Cudworth and Lydia Drinkwater*. Susannah died 6 OCT 1876 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 54. Mansfield Advertiser 25th Oct 1876: Died Mrs. Susanna Welch age 50 years in Sullivan Oct. 6th.

Josiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Josiah's family was next door to brother James, also near the Enos & Emalin Rose family. Josiah, Volney and Willy were farming. Julia kept house. Lydia & Stella were teachers, and Lilly and Addie attended school.

7 vi. Lucretia Welch (#163) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 15 FEB 1821. Individual flags: View. Lucretia died 18 APR 1891 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 70. Her body was interred APR 1891 in Ames Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married David Thomas Smith BEF 1846. (David Thomas Smith is #162.) Thomas was born 18 NOV 1824 in Hector, Schuyler, New York. Thomas was the son of Charles Smith and Elizabeth Thomas*. Thomas died 11 MAR 1894 in Elk Run, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 69. His body was interred MAR 1894 in Ames Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. In the Census of 1850, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. This is the property my parents and I now own. Since the current house was built about 1858, this would be the earlier building, the stones of which remain in the back lawn just above Shaw's pond.

Thomas was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. D.T. and Lucretia built the house my parents live in. Lucretia and D.T. built the house that my parents now live in. Lucretia's last two children were born in that house, the first, Will, in 1858. It was from Will that my grandparents, Lee and Mildred, bought the house in 1917. Prior to that, Lucretia and D.T. may have lived in a log cabin, the stone foundation for which is still just visible in the lawn southwest of the present house. Their great grandaughter, Nellie SMITH Shaw still lives on the adjacent property.

8 vii. David Welch (#3469) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1822. He married Miranda Wilkins AFT 1863. (Miranda Wilkins is #7201.) Miranda was born 1821 in New York. Miranda was the daughter of Nehemiah Wilkins* and Clarissa Unknown (Wilkins). She married Eleazar Orvis 1845. Miranda died 1890 at age 69. Her body was interred 1890 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Nehemiah Wilkins living w/ Miranda in 1860 so I assume him to be her father.

9 viii. Nancy Jane Welch (#3467) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1828. Nancy died 1880 at age 52. She married Cyrus Rumsey BEF 1848. (Cyrus Rumsey is #3468.) Cyrus was born 1826 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Cyrus was the son of Oliver Rumsey and Elizabeth Ludington. He married Nancy Goldsmith 9 NOV 1895 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York. BIO:In Sullivan Township Census 1850,60,70,80. George present in 1860as 3 but listed in 1870 as 9. Confusion on name of wife Jane, Nancy Jane or Nancy ? There are 4 more children at State Road cemetery who died young. Betsey V., Peter, Charles, James C. 1850 Census and 1880 give name as Jane, 1870 is Nancy and 1860 name is N.J.- I assume, then her name is Nancy Jane Welch, but she was called Jane.

10 ix. Amos Welch (#3471) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania MAR 1833. Amos died 1924 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 91. His body was interred 1924 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Seeley 22 MAY 1853 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Mary Seeley is #3472.) Mary was born MAR 1836 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Mary was the daughter of George Seeley and Emily Burley*. Mary died 1908 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 72. Her body was interred 1908 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Tioga County Records 1851-1854 gives her name as Seeley not Hakes as Minnie Welch (Seymour) had recorded. Also gives his mother's name as Nancy. Marriage announcement is Seeley. Hakes was name of Amos' mother, not his wife. This Mary Seeley is NOT included inthe Bible records of Electa SCOUTEN Rumsey and so is not part of the family of Lent Seeley and Electa Gardner as previousy believed. I do not have proof that she was d of George and Emily.

He resided in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1908. bds. W.L. (Note: wife died same year.] Living with brother David in 1870. Assume all children are Amos and Mary's. Tioga County Records 1851-1854 gives her name as Seeley not Hakes as Minnie Welch (Seymour) had recorded. Also gives his mother's name as Nancy.
