Looking for early 1800s records

I'm wondering if anyone can provide guidance on where I might look for birth info prior to 1852 when it began to be gathered on the county level. Should I be looking at church records? wills?

I'm looking for more info on the following:
Hiram Johnson b 1825 in Somerset Co., PA
married on 13 Apr 1845 to
Maria Enos b 3 Feb 1827 in Somerset Co., PA

I'd love to find Hiram's parents.
