Subsequent to my above postings, I discovered that at least some of the property appraisals prepared for the government (prior to its purchase of the properties for the DWGNRA) are filed at the park office. At least some of these contain snapshots of the properties involved. These files can be accessed by contacting the DWGNRA Historian in advance of any visit. She can also photocopy the appraisals and, if the photo mounting arrangement permits it, the photos themselves. The photos can also be camera-copied at her office which has available a copy stand equipped with lights. To locate an appraisal file, the Historian needs to know the tract number the government assigned to the property or the name of the last private owner of the property. The Historian has at her office tract maps showing the tract numbers assigned to the various properties. If an interested party knows the location of a piece of property but not the tract number or name of the last private owner, these maps may be a means of determining the tract number so the appraisal file can be located.
