Listed on record as Joseph W Wallen, Company I, 69th Regiment; date of filing: Sept 12, 1863 – mother; application no. 32957; cert no 18161 I checked the “widow’s pension records” for Joseph W Wallin and guess who is listed as making the application – mother Susan Wallin!!! Her address in her application is Hancock av, Germantown. It gets even more interesting. Susan Wallin testifies that her husband abandoned her 24 years ago and is probably deceased. She says that her son supported her for 12 years before he went into the service. At the time of filing, she is 58 years old. It adds that she is the widow of Joseph Wallin and the mother of Joseph W Wallin. She says that she was married to Joseph Wallin in the city of Philadelphia on the 25th of November 1833, before this her name was Susan Welch. She adds that said husband abandoned his family residing near Staffordshire, England in 1839 and that he has neglected to provide for her from June 1839. She signs with her mark and it is witnessed by John Campion and WJ Spencer. At the end, she is awarded $8 a month beginning 13 December 1862. The pension certificate is dated 5 April 1865 and sent to John H Frick, Philadelphial. Now my question is, how does this fit in with what you know about your Susan? Although this Susan lists her maiden name as Welch, she was married in Nov 1833, the same as your Susan (Cook?), in Philadelphia not England (I wonder if she listed the Philadelphia marriage place to help her application). The main problem is the maiden name; there could always have been a second marriage? No other children are mentioned but she doesn’t state that this is her only child either.
