Fox book vs. Census records - need help clarifying

I read "The Genealogy of the Fox Family" on archive.org to find a specific family. I've been looking for Abigail Fox (on the 1850 and 1870 census but not anywhere else)born 1788 who is listed with David Fox, Roxana Fox, Matilda Fox, Jacob Matchler, and Adam Chapman. It's only Roxana (spelled Rosana) with her on the 1870 census. And then when I look in the book it lists a William Fox in addition to Roxana and Matilda and David Fox is not married to Abigail but to someone named Phebe Case. If anyone knows how to decipher this mess I'd love to have the help. Thanks.
