Unfortunately the data on a death certificate is only as accurate as the informant's knowledge of the subject and in this case he probably didn't know or understand what he was saying. BTW Pennsylvania death certificates more than 50 years old will be at the State Archives in Harrisburg as of mid February. Does his obit have who his siblings were? If so I suggest getting their obits and death certificates. One of them is bound to have the parents' names as long as all of them didn't have a son in law who was confused about his answers.
Have you checked with the Mifflin County Historical Society? They may have church records or other references to him or his family that could be very helpful.
