You indicate he was listed as a "tailor" in Decatur Twp in the 1850 census.

This leads me to believe his parents may have given him to a tailor in an apprenticeship arrangement. Perhaps the parents were given a stipend from the person who took the boy. It was not uncommon to do so.

What was the occupation of the father? If he was a farmer, it is almost a given that he could not have given his young son superior skills to become a tailor.
