In 1962, to travel from Scranton, PA to Kansas City, MO, your family would have done the following:
Leave: Scranton 1:39 p.m. EST (Eastern Standard Time) on train #1, the Erie-Lackawanna Limited
Arrive: Chicago Dearborn Station the next morning, 8:00 a.m. CST (Central Standard Time)
Leave: Chicago, Dearborn Station 9:00 a.m. CST on the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (#19 The Chief)
Arrive: Kansas City, MO (same day), 4:55 p.m. CST
Note: the Central Railroad of New Jersey, in 1962, had discontinued passenger service in and out of Scranton. Scranton was freight only.
Delaware, Lackawanna and Western in 1960 had merged with the Erie Railroad and became the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad which offered passenger service from Scranton eastward to New York City and westward to Chicago.
Hope this helps.
