DURHAM - Mr. Rodgers Littell Way Sr., 84, died Sunday afternoon at Duke University Hospital.
Mr. Way was born in Swickley, Pa., attending grammar school there and then moved to Columbiana, Ohio and finished high school. He graduated from Allegheny College in 1941, where he was a member of the Allegheny Singers and Phi Delta Theta. He completed his education at Carnegie Institute of Technology earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Navy and served his country in WWII. Mr. Way was the owner of the R. L. Way Co., in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, which sold accessories for earth moving equipment. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and a member of the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club, receiving the George F. Hixon Award for community service. Upon moving to Durham, Mr. Way became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and a volunteer. He worked with a group of retired volunteers on Durham's Habitat for Humanity projects calling themselves the Geezers. He was a member of the Tobaccoland Kiwanis Club, serving on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Shriners, the Masons, and a social group called the Grumps.
Mr. Way was predeceased by his son, Rodgers Littell Way, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna Exten Way of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara W and Donald W. Heagren of Durham, Patricia W. and Joseph D. Kirk of Hamilton, Ohio; grandchildren, Brian Douglas Heagren, Renee Christine Bowen, Michael Tyler Hicks, James Douglas Hicks and Brenton Littell Way; great grandchildren, Coby Rawls Bowen and Keely Renee Bowen; sisters, Gretchen Bickerstaff of Davidson, NC and Sally McLaughlin Lewis of Florida.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 28 at 1 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Haywood Holderness, the Rev. Paul Ransford and the Rev. Betty Berghaus. The family will receive visitors at the church immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Benevolent Fund, 3639 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durhan, N.C., 27707 or to the Durham Habitat for Humanity, 215 N. Church Street, Durham, N.C., 27701. The Way family is being assisted by - Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.
