I haven't gotten into newspaper obit search engines much. There are some for-fee websites, a few free ones here and there, but it's all very much hit and miss. For example the Library of Congress has a few newspapers here and there digitized as does Google. Overall most of the newspapers that have ever existed have not been digitized and the chances are good that the only way to get an obit is the old fashion way of manually searching through microfilms at a library near where they died.
