I know he was born about March 1772. I believe his parents were Joseph Peatfield and Ann Cheetham, and I believe he had several brothers and sisters.
He and his wife and 5 children emigrated to America, but they didn't come all at the same time. It looks like the father Joseph may have come in 1827. A biography of his son James says Joseph "soon" went to Pennsylvania to invest in coal lands, and that he died "at a ripe old age" and is buried in St. Clair, PA. I can't find any records of him EXCEPT for a petition to the US congress from the 1840s on which the name "Joseph Peatfield" appears. The petition had something to do with a bank in Pottsville, PA, which is next door to St. Clair.
His children all settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He doesn't seem to be on any of the censuses, though censuses before 1850 don't give names, just numbers of people and approximate ages, so it's possible he is on one of those censuses and his age was recorded incorrectly. Jane's name appears on the 1860 census, but her husband's does not. Marital status isn't recorded on that census, but her death record said she died a widow in 1863, so he must have died some time before that.
I tried looking for Jane Peatfield in Pennsylvania, and got a very likely 1930 immigration record of a Jane Peatfield landing at Philadelphia with her 10-year-old son John. Since John was born in 1821, that's close enough for me. People seemed to be very approximate with their ages. But I can't find a census for St. Clair, and the historical records for Pennsylvania are very sparse prior to 1880.
I even wondered if the biography had it wrong, and Joseph went to St. Clair, Illinois, which is also coal mining territory. But no records there, either.
Yes, I've tried different spellings: Patefield, Petfield, Petefield, Patfield, Padfield; looked for typos like Pertfield, Pratfield, Pestfield, Pentfield. I can't find anything.
If you can find out anything about Joseph Peatfield in Pennsylvania, I'd be very, very grateful! I know a great deal about his descendants, and can would be happy to share the info.
