Dear Ginny,
Perhaps you're already aware of this but it appears that the younger John PUGH may have briefly served in the Civil War.There is an online database for Pennsylvania Civil War Soldiers (Civil War Arias) at the Pennsylvania State Archives site. There are a number of John PUGHs but one in Co I 35th PA Infantry enrolled 6/29/1863 at Light Street. He mustered in 7/9/1863 as a private at Camp Curtin (Harrisburg) and mustered out 8/7/1863.This short service to me would suggest a medical issue to preclude service or sickness or injury during service. This person was age 19 at enrollment so his age and location fit well with your John.Have you pursued this avenue looking for a Civil War record or pension for him or any descendants?
I think your theory that John is a son of John and Mary living in New Castle, Schuylkill County in 1850 is a good one.I imagine you're aware that there is a Samuel of the appropriate age to be another child of John and Mary living in Scott Township, Columbia County in the 1870 census. He is found in multiple later censuses in that county and living in Bloomsburg as late as 1915 when his well is discussed pertaining to a typhoid fever outbreak. (Google books)Have you looked for information about him that might give more information about John and Mary?Certainly he died after 1906 so there should be a state death certificate which should list parents.Or hopefully an obituary that might lead to something about John or the other possible siblings (something like predeceased by brother John of Light Street)Probably wishful thinking but I'd suggest following other PUGHs in the same locales and you may find the connection you're seeking. There are quite a number of PUGHs in 1850 New Castle, Schuylkill County as well.
Some mine accidents are included in yearly reports that can be found at Google books.Interestingly, there was a January 4, 1871 mining accident at the Forestville Colliery (Schuylkill County) in which a John and William PUGH were both killed. They both were married with children.Wonder if this could be the older John and another relative.
I don't know much about this area of Pennsylvania and don't think there are free online databases of newspapers from this specific area but I find old newspapers very helpful.
Good luck,
Karen
