The 1870 census of Pittsburgh is not indicating Daniel was at sea, but where he was born. In this case they wrote ocean or in other words at sea. However, all other census records I could find for him shows he was born in Pennsylvania. Considering when he was born and when his parents arrived it's most likely he was born in PA.
The 1860 census of Pittsburgh shows the same family. The 1850 census also of Pittsburgh has Samuel 26, Jemina 24 and 4 month old Samuel who is probably actually Daniel.
Going the other way the 1900 census of Cedar County, Nebraska shows Samuel, born April 22, 1822 in England and Jemina, born Jan 1825 in England. This census indicates they immigrated in 1851.
However, when the St John arrived in New York on July 5, 1849 it carried passengers Samuel Mason 30 and Jemina 23, both allegedly from Ireland.
Some of these records you can look at for free at labs.familysearch.org and Ancestry.com. For those you cannot see for free I suggest checking with your local libraries to see if they have Ancestry or Heritage Quest.
With a bit of searching you can probably find many of their children in other census records.
