Henry N Gates b 1821-24 OH, his parents from PA
This post was originally at the Gates Family Forum, it was suggested I post it in the state/county forums mentioned in the post:
Thanks so much for your reply. I posted in 2007 and since then I have learned much more about this family but still have not been able to find the names of parents or siblings for Henry N GATES. I don't have a date of death for him either, just an approximation. I am going to use this opportunity to bring this post up to date in hope that someone connected to this family will spot it.
He was born between 1821 and 1824, various dates given on census. He was born in Ohio. He states both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania. On this side of my husband's family there are many who came from Luzerne County, PA. but I have no evidence that is true for Henry's family.
He married Mary Jane RICHARDS (b 1835 OH) 1 May 1855 in Greene County, OH. Mary Jane was the daughter of Riley and Sarah C RICHARDS.
That is the first place I am able to pinpoint Henry. Henry and Mary Jane lived in Jefferson, Madison, OH in 1860. In 1870 they were in Sharon, Appanoose, IA and by 1880 they were in Centerville, Appanoose, IA - Henry is gone from the family before 1885 but thus far I haven't found death information for him. Mary Jane states on the 1885 Iowa Census that she is a widow. Mary Jane appears to have remarried about 1890 to a man with the surname DICKEY. She was in Lee, Polk, IA in 1900 and Des Moines, IA in 1905 by 1910 she was in Los Angeles County, CA living with a daughter and I assume she may have died there but I have no evidence for that as yet.
The children of Henry N GATES and Mary J RICHARDS were: Kate May GATES BOWMAN (b 1856 OH), Ellen J GATES (b 1858 OH), Sarah D GATES (b 1860 OH), Charles H GATES (b 1862 Appanoose County, IA - d 1944 Des Moines, IA), Jessie E. GATES (b 1865 IA), Susan M GATES RICHARDS (1869 IA - 1953 TX), Robert Lee GATES (b 1872 IA), Harry Thomas GATES (b 1876 IA).
If anyone has information or connects to this family please contact me. I appreciate any assistance I may receive.
