I've been searching for my sister who was adopted out for over 15 years and have belonged to various search groups, so I do have some ideas on this.
Usually when the mother put a man's name on the birth certificate it was a real name so I would think you are on the right track with Lucia or Ludzia or something similar.I have heard of cases, although rare, where the child of unmarried parents was actually baptized twice, so I would check with the church near where he was born even if he was baptized in NY when he was three.
Do you know what the obstacle was to William's parents marrying? Was the father already married, another objection might have been his age, or fact that he wasn't Italian, or that he died before they could marry.Do you think that the father actually boarded with her family?A local library should be willing to copy pages in the city directory for you for probably a small fee if you haven't gotten those already.
Even if you don't have a close enough DNA match to give you a name now, you have a better chance in the future so don't give up hope.Costs are dropping and I am sure many people will get their paternal lines tested in the future.Good Luck!
