Pope Family in Pittsburgh, PA
I've hit a brick wall, so I'm going to try a very general question to see if anyone has knowledge of my line of Popes:
Anyone out there know of an Archibald Pope (born between 1780 and 1810 in England) who married Jane Jobe in Pennsylvania, before 1826??
That's the only information I have of my ggGrandfather's parents.
My ggGrandfather was:
J. William Pope (b/1826 in Pittsburgh, PA; d/1916-same city).Married Eliza Smythe before 1849. They had 7 children: Virginia, James, Walter, George, Jennie, Marion and Oliver.J. W. Pope was a concert singer, prolific poet, wrote patriotic civil war songs(which were published), and was in charge of presidential campaign singing, traveling the country with Presidents Buchanan through McKinley. He was dubbed "the Grand Old Man of Pittsburgh."Supposedly buried in Braddock Cemetery, but I don't see him listed on their web site.
I'd be grateful for any small bit of additional information on anyone in that family, thanks!
~Dorothy
