Just a couple of comments, many people came to the Sharon and Youngstown area to work in the steel mills no doubt someone enticed him to come there, maybe a friend or relative. Secondly his Ethnicity was not Hungary German, that is a name incorrectly applied by those who transcribed the ship manifests over the last few years. On his manifest there is one column that lists his Nationality which in those days meant "the country of which he was a citizen"... in this case he was a citizen of Hungary and there is another column called "Race or People", this is what today we call ethnicity... in this column it states he was German. Just a note about Austria Hungary....... in that old Empire there were two parts.... that which was under Austria, which included the south part of what is now Poland, present day Czech Rep, western Ukraine, Bosnia, Slovenia and Dalmatia... the Hungarian part inc Croatia, Transylvania part of Romania, northern Serbia and Slovakia and a small piece of present day SE Austria .... so the area of your search can be narrowed down by eliminating those parts that were under Austria. He would have been traveling on a Hungarian passport. His brother as South Sharon is Janos not Ianos.... Janos is Hungarian for John. The info on the census was probably given by his wife... who was from Wales... and maybe she or the census taker was confused. You may be in luck! On the manifest over the occupation column is a series of numbers they are 7X-15830 505 4-19-38.... these markings were made in 1938 when he filed for US Citizenship.. the first number is the INS disrict which was 7 Cleveland, OH, later BUFFALO Northeast OH, Northwest PA, Western NY the next series of numbers is the Certificate of Arrival which verified legal entry... and 505 this indicates that there was some discrpency between the person on the manifest and the one applying... it could have been age or name spelling etc... and the good news is you can get copies of that info from the National Archives! And that paperwork will have his birthplace, etc. Also, as someone mentioned to you back in May, the name of his former residence was Holdvilag... which is one of 2 places in the Transylvania part of Romania... the Germans there are known as Transylvania Saxons and who were brought there perhaps in the 1700s or earlier to develop the area, they were farmers or craftsmen. It is one of the 2 places listed below Village Names: German: Abtsdorf Hungarian: Csicsóholdvilág Official: Tapu Spelling and/or dialect variants: Appesdorf Location: Country: Romania West of Copsa Mica, northwest of Seica Mare Postal-Code: Population: 1786: 599 1910: 1104 1940: 559 Lutherans 1966: 1184 1992: 145 Germans 31.12.1995: The Lutheran community had 52 members Genealogical Records: Village name in FHL records: Church records available at FHL: FHL Microfilm Nr.: FHL 1819/20 Hungarian Land Census Microfilm: Holdvilag FHL Microfilm Nr.: 1529957, item 4 Miscellaneous: Documented: 1309 as villa Abatis HOG The place above is now in Romania and is called Tapu located 149.4 miles NW of Bucureºti http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=latlong&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=46.0667&longitude=24.0833&size=big or it is Village Names: German: Halvelagen Hungarian: Holdvilág Official: Hoghilac Spelling and/or dialect variants: Hoghilag Location: Country: Romania East of Dumbraveni, west of Sighisoara Postal-Code: 3132 Population: 1786: 714 1910: 1004 1940: 671 Lutherans 1966: 1335 31.12.1995: The Lutheran community had 5 members Genealogical Records: Village name in FHL records: Church records available at FHL: FHL Microfilm Nr.: FHL Census Microfilm: Miscellaneous: Documented: 1345 Kirchenburg/church fortress HOG and Ortsgenealoge Derived from Hungarian "Hodwylag" = beaver world Heimatbücher: Halvelagen: wo ich zu Hause war: Heimatbuch einer siebenbürgischen Gemeinde. KRAMER... in fact most people coming from Holdvig appeared to be German If you are not familiar with Stephen Morse his web page is the ONLY way to search Ellis Island... I say this because I look at perhaps a dozen or more manifests a week, I do an Ellis Island seminar and have written an article about searching there... and Stephen Morse is a blessing to those searching Ellis Is. http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ellis.html Evem though I saw Kramers arr from Holdvilag there was no Katerina.... but I searched for all females arr at Ellis Is from 100-1910 first name beginning with Kat last name KRAMER and found one that caught my eye she was traveling with a son looks like Samuel... destination Homestead PA (where there was a huge steel mill) to husband Samuel... she was from P. Apold... and there is an Apold about 6 miles from Holdvilag! Kramer, Katharina P. Apold age 22 approx birth year 1882 arrival date 1904 Interesting Samuel KRAMER is found on a 1910 manifest destination Homestead PA stating that he had been at Homestead prior to this trip from 1902-1910 and that his next of kin at Nagy Apold was his wife Katherina. Could this have been your Andreas sister? Could she have gone back to Hungary (this was more common for people to go back home as they were homesick, especially women) Hope this helps.
