Hi Suzanne,
My husband's ancestors include an Isaiah/Isaac Mathews/Matthews from Springfield Township, Pennsylvania. However, the wife's name in my database is showing as Margaret Campbell Mathews per obituaries. Do you have a date of birth?
My Isaac/Isaiah was born abt 1827 and his siblings included Sarah Ellen 1853, Lucinda 1857, Mary Rebecca Mathews Covert 1861, Jennatta 1865, Eliza J. Mathews Rutter 1866, Elizabeth 1869, Samuel R. 1871, Catherine B. Mathews Varner 1874, Thomas B. 1877, and Charles W. 1878.His parents were Isaiah, born abt 1796 and Sarah, born abt 1797 and his father's siblings would have been William, George, Eliza and James although there may have been more that I haven't discovered.
I have found various spellings for this family including Mathews, Matthews and Mathes although the last three generations have spelled it MATHEWS.I have been told this family is of Irish decent although do not know who was the first to arrive from Ireland or when.
Last month I visited PA and photographed several different acestors' headstones at the IOOF Cemetery in Rockhill as well as the Duncannon Cemetery. I also photographed the family homestead of Samuel R. Mathews & Eva Chilcote Mathews just South of Orbisonia on Little Augwick Creek. It is my understanding that this homestead was previously owned by the Booher Family (Eva's ancestors).
I am looking forward to finding out more about this Mathews Family so if any of these names or locations are the same as what you show in your records, I would love to hear from you... I will be happy to share the photos that I took.
