Zachaeus Eatherton/Atherton
After many years of research (by me and many others), I have concluded that the parents of Zachaeus EATHERTON are Amy JENKINS and Asahel ATHERTON and that he was born in 1800 in Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co. Penn, (that was part of Luzerne Co. Penn at the time.)
Census records show him to have been born in either Penn or Va.
The 1810 census on Tunkhannock shows Asahel with a wife and a son ten and under and also a daughter ten and under.
The 1820 census of Delaware Co. Ohio shows Rufus Atherton with a family that could include Amy and Zachaeus and his wife Elizabeth as well as Rufus' wife and children.
In the 1820's a Zachaeus Atherton sold land in Deleware Co. and also a Zachaeus Atheston is on the auditors list for the county.
In 1830 and 1840 Zachaeus Eatherton is shown in the Deleware Co. census.
Rufus and his wife and Amy were all buried in the Sunbury cemetery in Deleware Co.
Amy Jenkins' great grandfather was named Zachariah which is the Hebrew for the Greek name Zachaeus. There are very few persons named either Zachariah or Zachaeus. Zachaeus Eatherton Jr.'s obit shows him to be Zachariah. Just a lot of conincidents?
For many years, many people believed that Zachaeus was son of Persis Bowyer and Ebeneazer Eatherton. However, probate records in Hancock Co. Ohio, indicate otherwise.
Does anyone out there have any data to either prove or disprove my conclusion that Amy and Asahel Atherton are Zachaeus' parents? If so, I would like very much to hear from you.
