J. S. Smith, Esq. ~ Karns City Pennsylvania ~ married in Iowa
The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Saturday, June 19, l875
MARRIED. -- Tuesday evening, June l5th, l875, at the Presbyterian Church, by Rev. James Stuart Reed, J.S. SMITH, ESQ. of Karns City, Pennsylvania, and MISS LAURA J. BESTOW, of this city.
Thus has gone out from among us, if we may be permitted to use the language of an admirer of the fair bride, the last of the "best-two" girls in the county. The event had been the theme of contemplation for weeks past by some two hundred and fifty invited guests, and but few failed to lend their presence at the time appointed. The church presented a beautiful appearance, arrayed in the decorations prepared by the fair hands of the bride's young lady friends. Mrs. Harry C. Palmer presided at the organ, playing an appropriate selection as the happy couple entered the church, preceded by J.C. Peacock and T.R. Mooney, ushers; following these were the groomsmen and bridesmaids, Mr. Tom Ewing and Miss Maggie Palmer and Mr. Eli Manning and Miss Laura Barclay, of Mt. Pleasant. A few well-chosen remarks in reference to the newly assumed relation of the parties were then made by Rev. Reed, and he pronounced the ceremony which made them "man and wife."
The bridal party then received the congratulations of their friends, and soon thereafter were conveyed to the depot, where they took the midnight train for their new home in Pennsylvania. We would gladly enter upon the task of describing the toilets of the bride and her attendants, as well as those of the gentlemen more immediately connected with the affair, but we feel unequal to the task, and will only say in brief that they were befitting the occasion. Below will be found a list of handsome presents made to the newly wedded couple, and we must not neglect to mention that the day following the ceremony each of the invited guests received a daintily prepared package of the several kinds of wedding cake, accompanied by the card of "Mr. & Mrs. J.C.
