Ward Snyder (Pittsburgh PA) Sued for Bigamy
Clipping from Pittsburgh newspaper dated February 20, 1907
Word has been received from Tulsa Indian Territory that Ward L. Snyder, son of Nicholas Snyder, of this city has been arrested on a charge of bigamy, preferred by his wife, formerly Jeanette Killian, of Olney Ill. Mr. Snyder is an oil man of this city and left about three months ago to look over some oil fields in the Indian Territory in the interest of his father who is a prominent oil prospector with offices in the Mellon National Bank building. He has a wife, Anna M. Snyder, and a child residing in this city. When seen this morning his father, Nicholas Snyder, said that he had heard nothing at all from his son as to the truth or falsity of the report. He said that the entire family of the young man are overcome with grief at the incident and that if there is any truth in the statement that his son is guilty of bigamy he should suffer the penalty of the law. The Snyders are well known among the businessmen and brokers of the city and a brother of the accused man is now United States consul at Kingston Jamaica, the scene of the recent earthquake disaster.
It is alleged by Mrs. Jeanette Snyder that she married Ward Snyder in Tulsa, I. T. January 23 and while on their honeymoon, she discovered that he had deceived her and that he had another wife living. He made some excuse, but, she says he afterward wrote sensational letters to her from Tulsa admitting the deception. The letters are said to be now in the possession of United States Commissioner Hyams. Snyder was released on bond of $2,000 awaiting the action of the grand jury in the affair. He met the second Mrs. Snyder about a month ago in Tulsa while she was visiting some friends there. It is also claimed that she has evidence that Snyder spent a year in the Ironton jail for representing himself as a special officer.
Snyder's side of the story has not yet come to this city, but in the meantime the relatives of the young man are very anxious about his welfare. His mother is prostrate with grief at her home, Shady and Wilkins avenues. She cannot believe that there is any truth in the reports that have come to this city. She expects to hear from her son very soon and find out what the real trouble is.
****This clipping was from a collection of my great-great grandmother's. I have no clue why she would have saved this article other than the fact that her daughter (my great-grandmother) married a man named William Snyder. Anyone recognize these folks??
