I really hope someone can help smash this brickwall for me!
My brickwall is my great-grandfather James Burns. Born around 1867, I have been unable to find him on any UK census from 1871 - 1891. Because of this, I believe he may have emigrated then returned to the UK.
I found this family, who were living in West Ward, Sharon, Mercer, PA, on the US 1880 Census:
According to the 1911 UK census, James was born in Robeston Wathen, Narberth, Pembrokeshire, Wales abt.1867.
I believe this US 1880 census return may show him and his family but to confirm, I really want to know the name of the father.
Is there anyway to find the names of any 'Burns' who died in this area between 1876 and 1880? Or the baptisms of his children who were born in PA?
James stated on his marriage certificate (in London, UK in 1897) that his father was Thomas Burns - railway signalman.
If there is no way to find the death index/record of a father, what is the best way to find the families' immigrant details? Surely, if I could find the family that way, then I could also find the name of the father.
....Then maybe I could find out at last, whether Jane (on the return) was his mother, or, at least, rule this family out from my search.
