I agree with keeping the originals. I actually spoke with her last week and she said she had no intention of getting rid of any of them. She was trying to work out with the state for a climate controlled location that they can be stored in so they don't crumble or get destroyed with age. The microfilm is kept in two places, one off site (To insure the records aren't lost as with a catastrophic fire) and the other at the courthouse. Her concern was the same as mine, that if people want to 'touch' the actual records, handling of them as frail as they are could destroy them forever, thus the reason for the microfilming.
