I don't know why you question if his first name was Joseph. Each census clearly shows your James' father as Joseph. But that's where getting your James' death certificate and obituary would put the matter to rest.

For Joseph I suggest getting his death certificate from the PA Dept of Health. For the obit check with the Lycoming County Genealogical Society. The other possibility would be to get Joseph and Virginia's marriage record circa 1893. It may have data on the parents. The problem is knowing where they got the license. In Pennsylvania licenses are recorded at the Register of Wills office where the license was gotten. Naturally I would start with the Lycoming County Register of Wills.

This is the procedure you will most likely have to take unless someone happens to have direct knowledge of Joseph and Virginia. Even with less common names it is best to get the person's obit and death certificate or other reliable means to verify who the parents were.
