From the Wilkes Barre Times Record June 29, 1911 Veteran Who Rode With Sherman Dies in the City John J Meighan was in the Battle of Winchester with Famous Commander Enlisted When President Lincoln Issued the Call and Took Part in Considerable fighting. Another veteran of the Civil War and calvary man who rode with Gen Phil Sherman on his riads through the Shendadoah Valley,answered the final summons today, when John J Meighan succumbed to an extended illness of Bright's Disease at his home, 23 Murray St. Although it was known his condition was serious, they were scores of friends and his family hoping for a recovery and the announcement of his death at this time will occasion sorrow in many sections of the valley. Mr Meighan was one of the best known resident of the Newtown section. He had resided there for years and after the close of the Civil War he returned and for many years followed the occupation of Colliery Engineer. Born i Ulster County New York in 1841 Mr Meighan was the right age and best condition to enlisted with the 53st Pennsylvania Volunteers when they responded to President Lincoln's call for troops He was a member of the Conyngham Post GAR, the Union Veteran Legion and the Association of the 53rd Volunteers. He was a lifelong practicioner of the Catholic Faith, A devout communicant of St Mary's RC Church and also a member of the Holy Name Society. The following children survive;Hugh, Mary, Frank, Edward, Mrs William Collins and two step children.William and James McGinley.Internment wil be in St Mary's Cemetary, Hanover Note John J Meighan was a pall bearer for my GGrandfather Martin Murray who died in 1895, I've dance around with the surnames Meehan and Boyle all the while doing my research, anybody have Murray/McLaughlin Connections in these trees?
