Yes, Antonia (Lawniczak) Pacewicz was Gus's mother, actually she was the mother of all the children. I mistakenly called Helen, Mitchel and Chester "steps".
Anyway ... we do have at least one lead on Gus's father. I would suggest using the surname of Karolczak since that is what's on his sister's death and marriage licenses.
Antonia remarried around 1890 and Gus was only 2 at that time, so that probably should account for the lack of adequate information on his marriage licenses, he may not have had many memories of his father.
On the other hand, his biological sister, Lottie, was 12 in 1890, she may have remembered her biological father, so definitely give the Karolczak name a try. If nothing else, maybe you could rule it out.
You could also try to locate anyone related to Lottie. She married Jacob Baginski September 18, 1906 in Jackson, Michigan and had the following children:
Chester E. Baginski
John Walter Baginski
Violet Helen Baginski
I knew about Harvey Patsey and have been to the cemetery to visit the grave site. I believe they are buried next to (or very close to) Gus's half brother, George Mitchell (formerly Mitchell Pacewicz) who is my grandfather.
I also have an ancestry membership and that's how I managed to get this far, but I have not been able to find a Karolczak connected to this family.
Since these families made their home in Jackson, Michigan maybe in the spring I will plan a trip back to the library there and see if I can come up with any more information.
If I can be of any more help, you can email me direct at firstname.lastname@example.org
